CSCSS Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C, LONDON, UK, March 04, 2014 - The Centre for Strategic Cyberspace + Security Science (CSCSS) is pleased to announce that Shawn Riley has joined CSCSS as Executive Vice President, Strategic Cyberspace Science.

In this role, Shawn will bring to CSCSS his years of diverse experience to address current and emerging challenges with the application of science of security in order to develop the research objectives and thrusts providing a framework for prioritizing cyber-sciences and R&D in a way that concentrates research efforts on limiting current cyberspace deficiencies, and expediting the infusion of a science of security.

This position required one of those rare individuals with deep and wide knowledge spanning both information assurance and cyber security with the leadership to see not just what’s needed today but what’s needed in the future of a more secure cyberspace.

With over two decades of international experience and Shawn’s strong personal brand reputation within the global cyber and IA communities, he will strengthen the CSCSS senior leadership team and help to shape the global focus of the Centres strategy moving forward. He will develop and execute the science of security strategy to accelerate and promote research in areas with game-changing potential with five initial thrust areas: Inducing Change, Developing Scientific Foundations, Maximizing Research Impact, Accelerating Transition to Practice, and supporting STEM efforts.

Shawn Riley is a Cyber Scientist and Senior Fellow with the global security and aerospace company Lockheed Martin. Prior to joining Lockheed Martin in 2003, Shawn was a Principal Cyber Security Engineer in the Washington DC area. Before that he was a Cryptologist in the U.S. Navy supporting the Information Warfare (IW), Information Operations (IO), and Information Assurance (IA) missions with tours of duty in both US and NATO war zones in the Middle East and Europe.

Speaking on behalf of the CSCSS, President and CEO Richard Zaluski stated, “The Science of Security is a key focus for CSCSS. Security Science is in our name and a key driver in our R&D programmes. In the context of cyber security, science and its application to “cyber” is a particularly complex area. We find ourselves being at the intersection of sciences and its application to “cyber”. In this context Security is lacking key foundational principles and fundamental definitions of concepts to really move forward. He went on to add, “The development of a “science” approach to cyber will be long term and must include a convergent, collaborative and inclusive transnational effort among governments, industry and academia. Collectively we spend considerable intellectual capital on a mixture of targeted, tactical activities, some of which lead to significant advances and innovation while others result in an endless chase to remedy individual vulnerabilities with mediocre solutions of limited scope. With our internationally focused approach and through the leadership of Shawn, CSCSS is uniquely positioned to lead in this area.”

As a strategic focal point for CSCSS the objective is to identify scientific questions regarding computer security, stimulate new work toward a new approach and to anticipate the challenges in securing the cyber ecosystem of the future.

“The science of security and IA science are top priorities for many countries around the world and I view this new role with CSCSS as the perfect opportunity to help lead the international discussions to shape, coordinate, and promote the science of security and IA science efforts and best practices across government, industry, and academia.” Shawn said. “Cyber is a team sport that requires a common language and well understood core principles to enable a shared understanding across international boundaries and effect change.”

At CSCSS our goal is to develop an organized, cohesive foundation to the body of knowledge through the science of security. We will also work to discover and apply foundational scientific laws for reasoning about and designing secure, healthy, and more resilient cyber ecosystems
